Newcastle United’s summer hopes have been dealt a huge blow as one of their targets has reaffirmed their commitment to their current team.
The Magpies had hoped for a large summer window in which they could significantly boost the squad’s depth, particularly its striking options, with Callum Wilson expected to leave.
One option that has been touted is RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko, but the striker has stated to Sport Bild that he intends to stay with the German club for a long time.
Newcastle suffer £55m transfer blow ahead of a big summer
Newcastle have been watching Sesko for well over a year, with an interest dating back to 2022, but they have now suffered a major setback as the striker has decided on his future.
There was speculation that Sesko will eventually join a Premier League club, with Manchester United also interested in signing the Slovenian international, but that now appears unlikely.
The 20-year-old was signed for £55 million but is now reported to be available for £42 million due to a release clause in his contract, and considering his potential and talent, it might be a great value if things pan out.
Sesko, a young and energetic forward, may have been an ideal substitute for Wilson and a backup to Alexander Isak, who spends a lot of time in the treatment room.
Regarding a potential move, Sesko stated, “I want to spend a lot of time here because the club suits me well.” We’ll see how many years it takes in total.
The Magpies must look elsewhere for new striker
Newcastle will undoubtedly sign a new forward in the summer, as even if they keep both Isak and Wilson in the squad, going without a third option for the next season would be a significant risk.
As players, the pair are both excellent at what they do, and you will be hard pressed to find a more clinical tandem in the Premier League, but their injury record is a major letdown, and Newcastle cannot rely on either.
Other names have been floated as possible replacements, including Dominic Solanke, Serhou Guirassy, and Can Uzun, all of whom are having excellent seasons, but there is no single standout target.
With the Dan Ashworth problem still unresolved, Newcastle is finding it tough to focus on its summer preparations, but this will hopefully change as soon as they find a new director to replace him.
