Eddie Howe is now one game away from taking Newcastle United back to Wembley.
The Magpies advanced to the FA Cup quarterfinals after defeating Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park on Tuesday night.
Newcastle United’s effort was far from impressive, as they needed a penalty shootout to get to the next round. Martin Dubravka was the hero, making two saves to help his team extend their FA Cup run.
The mission was completed on Tuesday night. Our primary goal was to stay in the tournament, yet there were several unsatisfactory parts of our performance.
Newcastle were far from their best, and there was no evidence of a comeback after their poor performance against Arsenal just days before.
The most disappointing thing for Eddie Howe was his team’s inability to hold on after taking the lead against Blackburn through Anthony Gordon.

After the game, Howe spoke with NUFC TV. He stated why he was so disappointed when his side conceded after going ahead.
“That was probably the most disappointing thing on the night from our side,” he added.
“We worked so hard to grab the lead, and you just hope it’s enough. Of course, we wanted to score and take the game away from Blackburn, but we conceded.
“From that moment, with the crowd up, I thought the players responded really well.”
Newcastle were expected to see it out in normal time
When Gordon scored Newcastle’s first goal, everything seemed to be in order. We weren’t playing well, but we should have had enough at that point to win in 90 minutes.
But we let Blackburn back into the game, and a Jamaal Lascelles error allowed them to equalise within 10 minutes of us taking the lead.
That gave the home crowd a boost, and they had numerous excellent chances to win the game.
However, Newcastle were able to hold on and maintain their composure during the penalty shootout. It was the Magpies’ second shootout of the season, and the outcome was considerably more positive.
Newcastle weren’t great on Tuesday night, but they did enough. They’re still in the FA Cup, which is all that matters.
