Newcastle United are keen to add a midfielder to their ranks this summer and they now look to be leading the race for one of their kay targets.
Chief scout Steve Nickson has been working hard over the previous few months, including a trip to Italy to look over Atalanta’s Ederson ahead of a possible move.
According to a recent ChronicleLive story, despite interest from other clubs, Newcastle are leading the battle to capture the Brazilian midfielder who has starred this season.
Newcastle want ‘brilliant’ midfielder this summer
Newcastle had set their sights on the Atalanta star at the end of last year, and their desire has never waned, even if they were unable to complete a deal in January.
Now, with money from the Champions League and marketing ties with Adidas, Newcastle is set to make some big name acquisitions to take them to the next level and compete with the best.
Nickson, who has previously brought in crucial players such as Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak, believes Ederson has the potential to be Newcastle’s next game changer.
The ‘excellent’ midfielder has been a major component in Atalanta’s team this season, attracting interest from Tottenham, Liverpool, and Manchester United, but Newcastle appear to be in the strongest position.
Newcastle need star quality next season
Eddie Howe has done an incredible job at Newcastle given the team he had to deal with when he initially arrived, and he has developed so many players through hard work and desire.
Newcastle has acquired a reputation as a fierce team that presses high and runs themselves into the ground for their manager and fans, but this can only take you so far.
There is a notion that they require greater talent in the first team if they are to advance to a Champions League spot or higher next season, which is essentially the ambition of these owners.
Ederson is clearly a good midfielder with a lot of energy, and he might provide Newcastle with exactly what they need offensively and defensively next season at the right price.
