Newcastle have failed to replicate last season’s heroics, and in the aftermath of Monday’s defeat to Chelsea, the club administration has been pushed to make a radical change in the dugout.
Richard Keys has encouraged Newcastle to fire Eddie Howe and replace him with Jose Mourinho to get the team back on track.
The Magpies finished fourth last season, earning a spot in the Champions League. However, they have failed to recreate such feats this season and have had a difficult time on
Newcastle are now 10th in the table, 15 points behind the top four after losing 3-2 to Chelsea on Monday. They have lost 12 of their 28 league games this season and finished last in a tough Champions League group that included Paris Saint-Germain, AC Milan, and Borussia Dortmund.
That form has put current manager Howe under pressure at St James’ Park. Broadcaster Keys believes that the former Bournemouth coach should be replaced by Mourinho, especially if Newcastle’s management team wants to win trophies.
He took to Twitter and asked, “What happened to the Geordie revolution?” It was fantastic to watch the Toon compete with the big boys last season. Why did the wheels come off so quickly? Is it time for step two? And Jose? There are no certainties of a trophy in football, unless you hire him.”
The prospect of Mourinho taking over has been floated before. Alan Shearer, a Magpies icon, is not very pleased with the transfer.
On the Rest is Football podcast, he stated: “He has had an incredible career, Jose. I am not sure where he will go next. But, no, I am very pleased with Eddie Howe at Newcastle, and the work he has done and is doing.”
Howe, 46, has been in charge of Newcastle since 2021, when he replaced Steve Bruce. He saved the team from relegation in his first season, and in his second, he led them to the Champions League and Carabao Cup finals.

He signed a new long-term contract with the club in August 2022. Howe’s job is allegedly not under immediate threat, though the Newcastle management will perform a review at the end of the season.
Elsewhere, his predicted successor Mourinho remains out of work. The former Chelsea, Manchester United, and Tottenham manager was fired by Italian club Roma in January.
Since then, he has been connected with a number of jobs, including a surprise return to Chelsea and the Saudi club Al-Shabab. Mourinho met Newcastle chairman Yasir al-Rumayyan during the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix in Jeddah over the weekend.
