Newcastle United Man Is Finally Fired By His Club

Rafa Benitez has departed his third club after leaving Newcastle United in 2019.

Celta Vigo has fired Rafa Benitez, the former Newcastle United manager, following their 4-0 loss to Real Madrid.

The Spaniard departs his position after just nine months, with the Sky Blues two points above the relegation zone. Celta was Benitez’s first assignment since being let go by Everton two years ago.

After initially impressing at Goodison Park, the tide quickly turned against the veteran coach, and considering his links to Liverpool, the Toffees administration acted quickly. Benitez did not enjoy the same honeymoon period when he returned to Spain, winning only one of his first 16 league games.

Winning only five La Liga games in total pushed the club into the relegation zone. Celta decided to pull the trigger after a poor performance at the Bernabeu on Sunday.

Vinicius Junior, Vicente Guaita, Carlos Dominguez, and Arda Guler each scored once to secure a 4-0 victory. Real Madrid, another of Benitez’s former clubs, put the final nail in the coffin, securing their position as league leaders.

La Liga: Rafa Benitez Sacked As Celta Vigo Manager

The decision comes only weeks after Benitez persuaded Javier Manquillo to quit Newcastle in January. His Toon contract was shortened so he could reconcile with the guy who brought him to Tyneside seven years ago.

A brief club statement announced that the 63-year-old was fired due to on-field performance. The announcement read: “Rafa Benitez and his staff leave RC Celta after eight months of absolute dedication and total commitment, but the team did not achieve the results expected by the club.”

“The club expresses gratitude to Rafa Benítez and his assistants for their honesty, professionalism, and tireless labour. RC Celta wishes them the best of luck and success in the future.
