Newcastle United are already planning for the summer, despite the fact that there are only 10 Premier League games left.
Newcastle United are prepared for a busy summer as they approach the end of the 2023-24 season.
After qualifying for the Champions League last year, this season has offered some incredible highs, but it has also been one of frustration. There have been mitigating circumstances, particularly injuries, but the Magpies still have 10 games to finish as high as possible in the Premier League standings.
Currently ranked 10th, United still has a strong chance of qualifying for Europe, but there is no doubting that the club’s season troubles have pushed the summer transfer window into sharp focus. Eddie Howe will want to ensure that his side has enough depth to attack a season on at least three fronts, possibly four, depending on Europe.
Newcastle’s summer transfer window is anticipated to open with the permanent acquisition of Lewis Hall. United are obligated to buy Hall from Chelsea for an initial £28 million if certain performance-related requirements are reached. However, the 19-year-old’s lack of playing time has caused uncertainty about his future.
Hall has only made 12 appearances for United, and his last start came in November in a 2-0 loss to AFC Bournemouth. Since the turn of the year, substitute appearances have been limited.
However, when asked if Hall’s permanent signing was ‘nailed on’ this summer, United manager Eddie Howe recently replied: “Yeah, I believe so. That is why I am planning for him to be here for the long term, which I am quite excited about because he possesses many of the attributes that we seek.
“In my mind, I expect Lewis to stay at Newcastle for a long time. He was always brought in with a long-term perspective, not as a short-term signing. He’s a long-term signing.
Meanwhile, Newcastle’s hierarchy is still in negotiations with Joelinton about a new deal. The Brazilian’s current contract expires in 2025, and Howe has previously admitted that he may be sold if an agreement is not struck soon. What happens to Joelinton will have an impact on United’s transfer plans, so keeping the 27-year-old will be almost like signing him, especially given his thigh injury.
Contracts for six players, two of whom are on loan, will expire at the end of the season unless new terms are agreed upon. And, with a handful of players out of contract in 2025, we look at when each Newcastle United player’s contract expires.
1. Elliot Anderson:
Signed a ‘long-term’ contract in September 2022.
2. Anthony Gordon:
Newcastle did not reveal the term of Gordon’s contract when he signed from Everton just over a year ago.
3. Harrison Ashby:
Like Gordon, the club did not announce Ashby’s contract duration. Currently on loan with Swansea City.
4. Lewis Hall
Will spend the 23-24 season on loan at Newcastle before transferring permanently from Chelsea next summer.
