JUST IN: Newcastle United 24-Year-Old Star Finally Speaks

Newcastle United forward Amy Andrews has set her sights on winning the Golden Boot after scoring a crucial goal in The Magpies’ Women’s Sela Cup victory over AC Milan at St James’ Park yesterday.

Becky Langley’s team won the inaugural Women’s Sela Cup with a 4-3 penalty shootout victory after a 2-2 draw in regulation time.

Elysia Boddy’s magnificent goal gave The Magpies an early advantage, but Nikola Karczewska and Valentina Cernoia quickly reversed the game in the visitors’ favour. Newcastle United appeared to be on the verge of losing the tie, but Andrews scored a late equaliser to force penalties. Andrews not only saved her team but also scored in the shootout, as Newcastle United converted all four of their penalty attempts.

Andrews said in the post-match press conference that scoring a critical goal was an incredible feeling, while also joking about the celebration that followed.

“It was amazing,” Andrews remarked. “It was just great to see the people so thrilled.

“I’m the type of player that enjoys celebrating, so I had a small celebration. Some people may find it cheesy, particularly British people, but I don’t care; it’s who I am, and I believe it inspires the next generation; tiny girls and boys may begin to do it.

“It was absolutely amazing.”

Andrews joined Newcastle United from neighbouring Durham earlier this summer. She scored eight goals in 27 games for the Wildcats last season. Given the quality of Newcastle United’s squad, Andrews is hopeful of boosting her goal output this season.

She stated, “I’m extremely confident [in scoring goals].” It’s an amazing group to be a part of; what a team and group to join. It is a dream come true.

“This was only our second game, but I believe we showed some highlights. Once everything comes together, I believe we will have a successful season.

“I feel very confident going into the season.”

The attacker then discussed her own goals for the new campaign, revealing that she has big expectations. Andrews hopes to win the Barclays Women’s Super League’s top prize in 2024/2025.

She stated, “I want to win both the Golden Boot and Player of the Season. I want to win everything and go to the WSL with the club.

“Newcastle already feels like home, although I’m not a Newcastle supporter. I feel like an adopted Geordie already.

“I’m ready to give my all this season and I will.”

On Sunday, September 8, 2024, Newcastle United will face London City Lionesses at Hayes Lane to begin their Barclays Women’s Championship campaign.
