Newcastle might sign Toulouse defender Logan Costa before the market closes, according to sources.
The Magpies have had a very quiet window, and while they have managed to keep key players Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimaraes, there have been no major signings.
Eddie Howe’s team has signed goalkeepers John Ruddy and Odysseas Vlachodimos, free agent Lloyd Kelly from Bournemouth, and teenage forward William Osula from Sheffield United.
Newcastle could move for Costa
Despite Kelly’s arrival, it is no secret that the Magpies are looking for defensive reinforcements, and a third offer for Crystal Palace player Marc Guehi was recently rejected.
While Newcastle are still hoping to complete the Guehi deal, they may have to look elsewhere if they are unable to make a breakthrough.
According to French journalist Sebastien Vidal, the Premier League club plans to make a “big bid” for Toulouse star Costa.
According to Vidal, West Ham is also interested in the defender, but the Magpies are “determined” to sign him.
While it is unknown at this time whether a deal for Costa would be an option to Guehi or in addition to the England international, Newcastle will need to act soon with the season beginning and the transfer window closing.
Costa joined Toulouse from Stade Reims in 2021 and has played 57 games for the club, scoring four times.
The 23-year-old is a Cape Verde international with two years left on his contract, so this summer could be the last chance for the Ligue 1 club to receive the best price possible if they aren’t going to sign him to new terms.
Newcastle are also looking for a right winger and have been connected with Chelsea’s Noni Madueke, but it is understood they will need to unload Miguel Almiron first, who saw a proposed deal to Charlotte FC fall through due to the parties’ inability to reach an agreement.
