Vincent Kompany believes it is critical for him to be at the forefront and appreciate Burnley’s supporters in both good and terrible times.
Following Burnley’s 3-0 defeat to Crystal Palace this afternoon, the Clarets manager spent a significant amount of time observing from the away end.
Many of the travelling fans had already left after Palace scored three goals in a row in the second half. Those who stayed appeared to have mixed feelings towards Kompany and his teammates, who came over to express their gratitude.
Kompany also appeared to apologise to the fans, raising his hands in recognition after another dismal performance.
When questioned if such was the case, Kompany responded: “No, that is not an apology. But, look, you work extremely hard every day, so you don’t need to apologise for working so hard.
“It is a more crucial sign for me. It’s simple for me to offer them a fist bump when we’ve won 12 games in a row; anyone can do it. In those instances, we worked hard to be humble ourselves.
“Even in difficult times, you must face your challenges. You still need to be there. You must be at the forefront of it, which is critical for me.
“It’s not much of a gesture other than a show of respect. If I were a fan after a performance in which you lost or had hope before the game, that would be the moment after the game when players leave and rush away. Perhaps I take it much worse.”
