50- Years-Old Manager Finally Issues Verdict After Heavy Defeat Shock

Paul Warne has revealed which moment, aside from Joe Wildsmith’s error, had a ‘huge impact’ on Derby County in their defeat to Charlton Athletic.

Derby County were upset on Tuesday night, losing 2-1 to Charlton Athletic.

The Rams may have seized the lead in the game with Eiran Cashin, but a similar story unfolded at Pride Park as the hosts lost more points from a winning position.

Goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith’s mistimed challenge on Daniel Kanu gave Charlton the opportunity to equalise from the penalty spot.

Alfie May obliged with a calmly executed penalty midway through the second half, and teenager Karoy Anderson scored the winner 10 minutes later.

Wildsmith’s enormous error, not for the first time this season, proved to be the turning point in the game, but Warne also believes Ryan Nyambe’s removal from the field was a role.

Paul Warne says Ryan Nyambe leaving the pitch had a ‘big impact’

Nyambe joined Derby from Wigan Athletic in the summer and has been one of the club’s top performers this season.

The 26-year-old has missed eight matches due to a groyne injury and AFCON duty with Namibia, but he has been a constant in the Derby defence, and his return was well-received.

Nyambe provided defensive protection down the right for the Rams against Charlton because he is difficult to beat in one-on-one situations and is a good tackler.

When he staggered off the pitch in the 52nd minute, the hosts lost their ability to deal with the threat. Thierry Small and Warne assessed the time he left the pitch as having a “big impact” on the game’s outcome.

After the game, he told BBC Radio Derby: “I just felt we lost a bit of a battle in the middle of the park; we didn’t look as fresh, and Ryan coming off has a big impact because he’s probably our most athletic defender.”

Derby simply weren’t good enough

While Nyambe’s forced substitution dealt a significant setback to the Rams’ 1-0 lead, Warne cannot use it as an excuse to hide the flaws of a poor performance.

Derby hasn’t been terrific for weeks, and the boss has admitted that they haven’t been amazing all season.

Surprisingly, they remain second in League One, but after two defeats to Barnsley and Charlton, concerns must be raised about Warne’s tactics.

At times, watching the Rams may be tough since fans are forced to sit through uninspired football games when they would rather be entertained.

Derby have the individual quality to put on entertaining performances, thanks to players such as Nathaniel Mendez-Laing and Corey Blackett-Taylor.

Unfortunately, during the Warne era, they have gone short of producing that, and if they are not careful, they will fall short of promotion.
