Thiago Motta remains one of the leading candidates to take over from Stefano Pioli at AC Milan but there are a couple of obstacles to overcome first, a report claims.
Milan is having a season of ups and downs. They are now 16 points behind their city rivals Inter in the title battle, but they appear to have a top-four berth firmly in their grasp, despite exiting the Champions League at the group stage and the Coppa Italia in the quarterfinals.
The fluctuating performances, combined with the injury crises and failure to integrate key new recruits, have raised serious concerns about Pioli’s future, which owner Gerry Cardinale appeared to acknowledge.
According to Tuttosport (via PianetaMilan), Motta is on Milan’s list of prospective successors to Pioli, but Juventus is also considering him as a replacement for Max Allegri.
Furthermore, the former midfielder appears to be in demand abroad, as PSG has expressed interest. Much will be determined by Luis Enrique’s performance in the Champions League, but it is important to remember that Motta is one of Sheikh Al Thani’s long-time protégés.
He and Javier Pastore were his first transfers as Paris owner, and they could be reunited this summer. Meanwhile, Bologna offered him a contract renewal (his present agreement expires on June 30), but Motta has requested that the issue be postponed until the end of the season.
