Newcastle United will be able to free up a portion of their pay expenditure this summer as longstanding squad members prepare to leave.
Newcastle United has begun conversations with a number of team members who will shortly be out of contract at St James’ Park.
Decisions must be made on Matt Ritchie, Loris Karius, Paul Dummett, and Mark Gillespie, although head coach Eddie Howe has stated that no one has been informed that they will be leaving the club, despite claims. Howe wants to build the groundwork for his current roster for next season and understands that keeping some squad members would help Newcastle’s FFP cause.
This week, Howe stated, “Everybody in our squad now has the opportunity to remain in our squad next year, regardless of contract situation.” Have we already decided on somebody and told them they will not be awarded a new deal? “Certainly not.”
Goalkeeper Karius is coveted by Serie A clubs, but he understands he must make a decision about next season due to family obligations with his partner and family in Italy. However, negotiations about Ritchie and Dummett have occurred in recent days, and both are expected to return next season.
One choice has already been taken about Republic of Ireland midfielder Jeff Hendrick, who will depart at the conclusion of his contract. Hendrick was loaned to Sheffield Wednesday, however he has not been registered for the Owls’ second half of the season.
However, because his loan is for a season, Newcastle has indicated that Sheff Wed must adhere to the terms of their agreement, and he will remain in South Yorkshire. Hendrick joined United from Burnley in 2020 and earns £50,000 per week, giving Newcastle additional pay flexibility whenever he leaves.
Newcastle are also trying to transfer Scotland international Ryan Fraser for a cash sum in order to save an additional £70,000 per week on wages.
