Newcastle United are one of the Premier League clubs who will potentially be feeling underprepared following a slow start in the market.
Eddie Howe’s team will welcome their home fans back to St James Park in just over a week when Southampton visit Tyneside for their season opener.
As things stand, Newcastle has only been able to bring in Lloyd Kelly to potentially improve the starting XI.
Newcastle struggled greatly last season due to a lack of a strong enough team to compete on multiple fronts, and they have yet to rectify this issue.
The Toon are now expected to compete with Arsenal for the signing of a proven midfielder after both teams made contact.
Newcastle hold contact with midfielder who Arsenal want to sign
Fans have less than two weeks till the start of the 2024/25 Premier League campaign, which promises nine months of thrills and spills.
One manager who may wish for a few more weeks to prepare is Howe, who has already issued multiple transfer warnings to his board.
However, Newcastle appear to be heading into the new season with a squad that has not changed significantly over the summer.
If anything, the loss of Elliot Anderson and bright prospect Yankuba Minteh suggests Newcastle are a worse team than they were in May.
According to Calciomercato, Newcastle is one of the clubs that has spoken with Adrien Rabiot’s representation about a prospective transfer.
The ‘world class’ midfielder has been without a club for several weeks following his departure from Juventus.
However, Liverpool, Manchester United, and Arsenal have all expressed interest in him this summer, in addition to Newcastle.
Rabiot is rumoured to be interested in joining the Premier League this summer, which is good news for all of these clubs.
Newcastle could land established midfielder in Adrien Rabiot
One of Newcastle’s best areas is in the middle of the pitch, where Howe has Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes at his disposal.
However, by signing a player of Rabiot’s calibre, Newcastle would undoubtedly be making a statement, given that he is a regular in the France national team.
The one difficulty Newcastle may face is that the 29-year-old would most likely expect a large salary deal as a free agent.
It is also worth remembering that Newcastle will see Sandro Tonali return in the early weeks of September, creating intense rivalry for positions.
Of course, this is a case against Newcastle’s lack of depth from last season, but Rabiot is unlikely to be pleased with being a rotational option.
