JUST IN: Nathan Jones Reveals Top Secrete About Charlton Athletic striker

Charlton manager Nathan Jones believes it was not worth jeopardising striker Matty Godden’s fitness at Wigan Athletic.

The forward, who was signed from Coventry City over the summer, was unable to make the trip to the Brick Community Stadium on opening day.

Jones remarked, “He has a tight hamstring.” We simply are not willing to take the risk. There’s no point going up here. Friday afternoon traffic from London to Wigan takes six and a half to seven hours.

“It would have just been determinative. There’s no point with games on Tuesday and Saturday. We have the necessary depth. So we did not put him at risk.”

The Addicks return to action on Tuesday, hosting fellow League One side Birmingham City at The Valley in the first round of the EFL Cup.

“We want to be strong,” Jones said when asked if he plans to rotate his squad for the game.

“We’ll play the first three games of the season before taking a short break. We’ll need plenty of energy since Birmingham are another fantastic team. We’ve got a rocky start.

“Birmingham are a tough team. I have to put my trust in the squad. We will see. We’re dusting ourselves down. I’ll make sure we’re tactically correct for that, and then we’ll proceed from there.”
