Newcastle United have ended discussions with MLS side Charlotte FC over winger Miguel Almiron, according to reports.
Charlotte had been seeking to get Almiron’s services before the MLS transfer window closed at midnight on Wednesday.
However, Newcastle were said to be expecting offers of £16 million or more for Almiron, with Charlotte refusing to go that high.
According to the Northern Echo, talks between the two clubs have already ceased, resulting in Charlotte missing out on two winger targets in the space of a few days, with their bid for Feyenoord also falling through.
Although Almiron will not be moving to Charlotte, he may still leave the club, with Newcastle now looking for fresh wingers and apparently willing to sell the Paraguay international.
A return to MLS would have been a dream situation for Almiron, who joined Newcastle from Atlanta United in January 2019, shortly after helping the Five Stripes win the MLS Cup in a season that saw him score 22 goals and assist 21 times in 70 games across all competitions.
However, given Atlanta United’s rivalry with Charlotte FC, which is little over four hours distant, this is a move that would have been unpopular with Almiron’s former club’s fans, who rate the 30-year-old as one of their greatest players of all time.
Almiron has 30 goals and 12 assists in 209 Newcastle appearances, with his greatest season at St. James’ Park coming in 2022/23, when he scored 11 goals and assisted twice in 34 Premier League games.
