Signing young players from Chelsea or Manchester City is always a risk, but Saints have been profitable in recent years as several have made the first team and the sale of Romeo Lavia and Tina Livramento has more than covered the costs of signing them all; now another starlet could be on his way from Stamford Bridge to St Mary’s.
The promising youngster in question is Chelsea’s promising 20-year-old midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu, according to -southampton-close-in-o, who say that Chelsea want to loan him to Southampton because they are impressed with Russell Martin’s system and philosophy, which are very similar to those pursued by Enzo Maresca.
Chelsea is thought to have big hopes for Ugochukwu and thus are not trying to sell him, but rather loan him with the option to buy.
The French defensive midfielder is valued between £20-25 million and played 12 times for Chelsea in the Premier League last season. He joined from Stade Rennes for around £8 million.
However, with first-team appearances limited at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea hopes to improve his match sharpness at Premier League level.
If this happens, it will be good business for the Saints; they will gain a talented player who might cover a position in the centre of midfield.
